Many many thanks to Bic for her gracious introduction. I am very enthusiastic to be on board.
This week CNN posted a video asking, “Is Nollywood embracing quality?” A loaded question, obviously, and a premise I disagree with strongly. That aside, the piece offers insight into Kunle Afolayan’s continued efforts to bridge the divide between home-grown Nollywood and mainstream international cinema. For a sense of the often short-sighted criticism Nigerian producers face when they do present their works at global venues, see Phil Hoad’s Guardian review of Mahmood Ali-Balogun’s Tango with Me. One wonders what sort of concessions Nigerians must make for their cinema to be “legitimized” (Hoad’s phrase) in the eyes of foreign critics and audiences.
